Outsourcing Land Survey Drafting: A Guide for US Survey Firms

How US survey firms outsource CAD drafting: what to send, what stays in-house, how to choose a partner and what drives the cost.

By the Cadra Solutions drafting team · Updated

Most survey firms in the US run into the same problem sooner or later: the field crews can collect data faster than the office can draft it. Closings get pushed, ALTA jobs stack up, and the person who could be reviewing and sealing drawings is stuck redrafting linework. Outsourcing the drafting is how many firms clear that bottleneck without hiring for a workload that rises and falls with the season.

Why US survey firms outsource drafting

  • Seasonal workload. Survey work peaks with the construction and real-estate seasons. A full-time drafter is either overloaded or underused for much of the year.
  • Hiring is slow. Experienced survey drafters are hard to find, and training a new hire on your standards takes months.
  • Field crews wait on the office. When drafting backs up, crews end up waiting for drawings instead of moving to the next job.
  • Fixed costs. Salary, software seats and equipment cost the same whether the drafting queue is full or empty.

An outside drafting team turns that fixed cost into a variable one. You send work when you have it, and you pay for the drawings you receive.

What you can outsource

Almost any drawing that is built from data you already collected can be drafted by a partner:

What stays with you

Outsourcing the drafting does not move professional responsibility. Your firm still collects the field data, makes the boundary decisions, reviews the drawing and signs and seals it. A good drafting partner flags anything that looks inconsistent — a deed that doesn't close, a monument that doesn't match the record — and leaves the call to you.

What to send for a smooth first job

  • Point files (CSV, TXT or your data collector's export) and any raw files
  • Field notes, sketches and photos
  • Deeds, legal descriptions, recorded plats and prior surveys
  • For ALTA work, the title commitment, exception documents and the Table A items the client has selected
  • Your CAD template: layers, text styles, title block and a finished drawing you like as a reference
  • Units and coordinate system (for example, state plane zone and whether the job is in US survey feet or international feet)

The reference drawing matters more than most firms expect. It is the fastest way for a new drafter to match your office's look.

How to choose a survey drafting partner

Use this checklist when you compare providers:

  • Survey-specific experience. General CAD drafting is not the same as survey drafting. Ask for samples of the drawing types you produce.
  • Works in your template. Every drawing should come back in your layers, styles and title block.
  • Quality control. Ask who checks the drawing before it is sent to you, and how.
  • Current US standards. They should know the 2026 ALTA/NSPS standards and handle survey foot and coordinate system questions correctly.
  • Confidentiality. Your client data should be used only for your job, with an NDA available.
  • Direct communication. You should be able to talk to the person drafting your job, not just an account manager.
  • A trial job. The best test is a real project. Send one and judge the result.

What drives the cost

Pricing is usually per drawing, per hour, or a monthly rate for a dedicated drafter. Whatever the model, the price depends on:

  • Drawing type and complexity (an ALTA with many Table A items takes longer than a mortgage survey)
  • Number of sheets and the size of the site
  • How complete and clean the field data and documents are
  • Turnaround: standard or rush
  • Volume: steady ongoing work usually costs less per drawing than one-off jobs

Working across time zones

With a drafting team in India, part of the drafting can happen while US offices are closed. Agree on how files are handed over and when you will get drafts back, so the time difference works for you instead of against you.

Getting started

Pick one typical job, send the data and your template, and compare the result with what your own office would produce. Cadra Solutions drafts the first 8 hours of a real project free, so you can judge the quality before you commit.

Quick answers

Is it safe to send client survey data to an outside drafting company?+

It should be. Ask for confidential handling, files used only for your project, deletion on request and an NDA before you send anything.

Who is responsible for the survey if drafting is outsourced?+

Your firm. The licensed surveyor still reviews, signs and seals the drawing; the drafting partner prepares it from your data.
